The Mary Gordon Duffee Sampler

What Alabama resident was a writer, poet, and historian and worked as a hostess for her family‘s hotel at the Blount Springs Resort?

Mary Gordon Duffee (1844-1920) was called the "Poet Plunderer" by the
New York Times and the "Poetess of the Mountain" by her fellow Alabamians. Author of 59 "Sketches of Alabama" that appeared in the Birmingham Weekly Iron Age, 1886-87, she was a trailblazer for women not only as a freelance journalist, but also in how she lived her private life.

While most of her writing was lost to fire, this collection, compiled by Blount County, Alabama poet Irene Latham, includes Mary Gordon Duffee's words about her home state of Alabama, weather, flowers, the Civil War, love, longing, and more.

A sampling of prose and poetry written by Mary Gordon Duffee (1844-1920).
